A beautiful landscape oil painting entitled On The Upper Thames dating from the Victorian period.
This is almost certainly the work of artist Edward A Atkyns, who was active between 1878 and 1883. His work The 'Old Swan' and Swan Wharf is in Chelsea Library in London.
It depicts a lovely slice of the Oxfordshire countryside. The River Thames can be seen meandering across the foreground, surrounded by the trees and greenery. A couple of figures — an adult and child — can be seen walking across a riverside meadow in the distance, while an impressive country house sits overlooking the Thames atop a hill in the background.
The antique oil on board work appears to have been signed in pencil by the artist on the back of the board. This has faded over the years. Below, another hand has credited the work (I believe erroneously) — first in pencil then in a piece of paper mounted to the rear of the painting — as On The Upper Thames by E.A. Alkyns. Given the similarity in style to other works by Atkyns and the similarity in name, it is likely somebody didn't notice the crossed 't' when attempting to ensure the details of the piece were not lost.
The dimensions of this gorgeous antique oil painting are:
Framed: 42cm x 31cm
Unframed: 30cm x 20cm
